A Festive Evening of Music and Community at St Andrew’s

Last night, St Andrew’s Parish Church in Kettering was filled with warmth, music and Christmas spirit as the Melody Choir presented its Christmas concert to a wonderfully supportive audience of friends, family and members of the local community.

The Melody Choir is proud to be a community choir, and that sense of togetherness was at the heart of the evening. Under the careful guidance of our choir manager, Christopher , and the inspiring leadership of our Conductor and Musical Director, Jonathan , the choir delivered a programme that was joyful, reflective and full of festive cheer. We were beautifully supported throughout by our talented accompanist, Lizzie , whose playing added depth and sparkle to the evening.

The concert featured a number of memorable solo performances. Jonathan , Emily , Evie and Lizzie each brought their own character and warmth to their solos, captivating the audience. A particular highlight was a delightful piano duet performed by Lizzie and her husband , which was received with enthusiastic applause.

One of the most anticipated moments of the evening was the performance of The Charterhouse Carol, a new piece for the choir. The choir rose to the challenge, performing it with confidence and sensitivity.

The audience was very much part of the celebration, joining in on several well-loved carols and helping to create a truly festive atmosphere. Adding a deeply personal and reflective moment to the programme, Diane shared a poem about the School Nativity that she had written herself, an amusing story which resonated with many, and raised many smiles in the choir and audience alike.

Perhaps the most moving moment of the evening came with the choir’s special unaccompanied rendition of The Lord’s Prayer . Sung without instrumental support, it filled the church with a quiet power and emotion that many in the audience will not soon forget.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who came along to support us and to share in this special evening. Concerts like this remind us why community music matters so much — bringing people together, creating shared moments, celebrating the season in harmony and raising funds for The Cransley Hospice.

Back to Rehearsals - And we're feeling good!

There’s something special about that first choir rehearsal after the long summer break. Walking back into the arts centre, catching sight of familiar faces, and hearing the first snippets of warm-up chatter – it’s like coming home. Everyone’s buzzing to share holiday stories, talk about where they’ve been, and simply reconnect after a few weeks apart.

The energy in the room is electric. You can almost feel how much we’ve all missed singing together. And of course, the countdown to Christmas starts now! Those festive concerts and charity events are some of the highlights of our year – great fun, a chance to spread some cheer, and all for good causes.

This is also the moment when the creative ideas start flying. Our community choir loves to make the repertoire a true team effort. Members throw new (and classic) song suggestions into the mix, and we vote on what makes it into the season’s set list. The variety is always fascinating – from timeless tunes to surprising contemporary picks – and that’s what keeps our performances fresh.

With dates already filling the calendar, we’ve also had a little shuffle in the seating plan. Being able to hear each section clearly makes a huge difference, and finding just the right spot helps the harmonies click.

One of the best parts of the new season? Seeing new singers join our ranks and welcoming back returning members. Every voice adds something unique, and together we create a sound so much bigger than the sum of its parts.

So here we go – heads high, music folders open, and voices ready. Time to polish up those tunes and bring some magic to the Christmas season!

The Melody Choir's Summer Concert: A Night to Remember at St. Andrew's Church

Last Saturday evening, we gathered once again at the beautiful St. Andrew's Church in Broughton for our much-anticipated Summer Concert, marking the second year in a row that this splendid venue has hosted our choir. There is something truly magical about this church, and it feels like home to us. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the church and all the wonderful volunteers who made us feel so welcome. The support and hospitality we experienced were second to none, and the delicious buffet and refreshing Pimms served to both the choir and audience members made the evening even more delightful!

As the sun set and the evening grew warmer, we took to the stage, eager to share our Summer repertoire with friends, family, and music lovers alike. From the moment we started singing, the atmosphere was filled with joy and enthusiasm, creating a bond between performers and audience that is truly special. Each note resonated within the sacred walls, uplifting everyone present.

A highlight of the concert was undoubtedly the solo performances that showcased the incredible talent within our choir. Our pianist, Lizzie, captivated the audience as she beautifully sang and played "Moon River." Her rendition of this classic hit was not only poignant but also filled with emotion, painting a picture that transported us all to a serene place of nostalgia and hope. It's moments like these that remind us why we love to sing.

Equally enchanting was our Musical Director, Jonathan Ellson, who took the stage to perform a soliloquy from the beloved musical "Carousel." His rich voice enveloped the church, leaving everyone spellbound as he conveyed the deeply heartfelt sentiments of the piece. Jonathan's passion for music shines through every performance, and it was a privilege to witness his artistry firsthand.

Celebrating a Community Connected by Music and Memory

Our recent Summer Concert in Grafton Underwood was a great success, despite the heat. The church is well worth a visit, not only for its beauty but also for its historical significance related to the nearby US Army Air Forces base that played a crucial role during World War II. The base, which housed the 457th Bombardment Group, was a vital part of the Allied air campaign and contributed significantly to the war effort.

Notably, inside the church, visitors can admire a beautiful stained glass window featuring an airplane, which serves as a touching tribute to the brave airmen who served during that time. This window not only enhances the church's beauty but also commemorates the connection between the local community and the military history of the area.

We are very grateful to the local volunteers who provided the audience and us with a fabulous buffet and an affordably priced bar, helping to create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone involved.

Spring has made an early entrance this year, much to our delight! It's been truly uplifting to witness vibrant spring flowers starting to bloom around us, hinting at the warmth and joy this season brings. Their colourful presence breathes life into our rehearsals and inspires our music-making.

This year, we're thrilled to be back in our beloved church, rehearsing with enthusiasm. The new heated floor has been a wonderful addition, making our practice sessions even more comfortable and cosy. We're incredibly grateful for this improvement and the difference it makes!

Our choir family has grown! We've welcomed quite a few new members, and each one brings unique talents and energy. It's fantastic to have them with us, adding to the richness and diversity of our choir. We're eager to see how this mix enhances our performances.

Welcoming a Bright New Year!

Happy New Year from all of us at The Melody Choir! As we settle back into our routine after a festive Christmas break, we’re filled with excitement and gratitude for the journey ahead.

Our Christmas concert was a heartwarming success, and we are thrilled to share that we raised an impressive £700 for The Thomas Fund. Thank you to everyone who contributed and attended; your support makes a significant difference in our community.

As we move forward into 2025, we’re delighted to welcome several new members to our choir family. It’s wonderful to see fresh faces and hear new voices joining our harmonious community. We can’t wait to share our love of music with all of you.

Currently, we are busy rehearsing the repertoire for our much-anticipated summer concert, which will take place on June 20th. Our playlist includes some exciting new songs that we’ve already fallen in love with.

The Melody Choir Christmas Concert at Kettering Arts Centre

On the evening of Wednesday, 11th December, the Kettering Arts Centre at St Andrew's Church was transformed into a haven of festive cheer and musical delight as The Melody Choir hosted their much-anticipated Christmas Concert. Initially, 100 seats were arranged for the audience, but the overwhelming demand saw many more added, reflecting the community's eagerness to partake in this heartwarming event.

The atmosphere was nothing short of magical. The venue exuded warmth and cosiness, perfectly complementing the enchanting performances that filled the night. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Kettering Arts Centre for graciously hosting us, and a special thanks to our dedicated Manager, Christopher Thompson. His voluntary efforts in organising the entire event were invaluable, and his unwavering commitment to the choir did not go unnoticed.

Our talented Director of Music, Jonathan Ellson, guided us through a repertoire that left the audience spellbound.

Accompanying us on the piano, Lizzie Peacock added her musical flair, enhancing the beauty of each piece.

The evening was graced by memorable solo performances. Emily captivated everyone with her rendition of "Walking in The Air" by Howard Blake, while our tenor, Jonathan, brought nostalgia with Irving Berlin's "White Christmas".

Our resident poet, Diane, added a unique touch with her annual poem, "The Hustle and Bustle of Christmas." Her words, both humorous and poignant, reminded us to care for one another amidst the festive rush.

Lizzie's piano solos, including "Silent Night" by Franz Gruber and "Winter Wonderland" by Felix Bernard, were met with awe and admiration. Each note resonated with the spirit of the season, creating moments of reflection and joy.

The concert also served a noble cause, raising funds for Thomas's Fund. We were honoured to have the founder share her heartfelt story of establishing the fund in memory of her son. Her words reminded us of the profound impact of compassion and community support.

In every sense, the concert was a resounding success. It was a celebration of music, togetherness, and the true essence of Christmas. We thank everyone who attended and supported the event, making it a night to remember. As we look forward to more musical endeavours, we remain grateful for the shared moments of joy and harmony.

As the festive season approaches, The Melody Choir is thrilled to announce our much-anticipated Christmas concert, set to be a memorable highlight of the year. On 18th December, we will be carolling at a community event being held at The Briars in Brambleside, Kettering. It's a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and enjoy the spirit of the season, as well as helping to raise funds for the charity 'Social Bites', who help the homeless and those in need.

Our rehearsals have been even more enjoyable this year, thanks to the new underfloor heating in the church. It has created a cosy and welcoming environment for us to prepare for these exciting events. 60 Years of MIND Northamptonshire

Last weekend, we were privileged to perform at a concert celebrating 60 years of MIND Northamptonshire.

Not only did we get to hear the amazing Decibelles Ladies Choir and The Tenor - Joshua Daniel, we also got to hear the incredible talent of some of the inspiring people who are service users of MIND. Music is more than just singing, it has the power to uplift, inspire, and bring people together.

We would also like to thank all of the staff and volunteers who were involved in putting the concert together. They did such a great job. Thank you so much

AUTUMN HARMONIES WITH THE MELODY CHOIR

As the leaves turn to hues of gold and crimson, there’s a certain magic in the air that heralds the return of The Melody Choir's rehearsals. This September, we joyfully reunited at St Andrew's Church in Kettering, a space that feels like home with its beautiful new flooring and resonant acoustics. Singing within these hallowed walls is an experience far richer than anything a small room could offer, and it’s wonderful to be back.

This autumn, we have the pleasure of welcoming some new faces to our choir. To our new members, we extend the warmest of welcomes! It’s always a delight to see our choir family grow, bringing fresh voices and new friendships into the fold.

Our performance calendar is brimming with exciting events this season. We’ll kick things off with a concert for the fantastic charity, MIND, on October 19th with the highlight of our calendar, our annual Christmas Concert on December 11th at St Andrew’s, hosted by Kettering Arts Centre. This cherished event is always a seasonal favourite, and we can't wait to share the joy of music with our community.

As the festive spirit envelopes us, we’ll be carolling at The Briars in Kettering on December 18th during a special community event.

As the nights draw in, our rehearsals remain a warm and inviting refuge from the chill outside. There’s nothing quite like the camaraderie and shared passion for music that fills the air during these sessions. Last week, we enjoyed a wonderful social evening at the Kino Lounge, further solidifying the bonds within our lovely, diverse group.

However, amidst the joy of new beginnings, we also faced a heartfelt farewell. At the end of September, we said goodbye to our accompanist, Ed Pick, who has been with us for many years. Ed has made the tough decision to step down due to family commitments, and we are deeply grateful for his dedication and the beautiful music he has helped us create. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Looking ahead, we are thrilled to welcome Lizzie, our new accompanist, who will be joining us at our first rehearsal in October. We are excited to see how her talents and enthusiasm will inspire our performances this season.
